Foundation Planting at Home
Project type
Foundation Planting at Home
Date
September 2025
Location
Lorain County, OH
Our new house in Ohio was pretty typical of suburbia. The landscaping included popular ornamental species that are invasive, specifically Japanese Barberry bushes and Miscanthus grass. We also had a Weeping Cherry that was only partially weeping. So, I removed most of these plants and replaced them with native species suited to the site.
I kept the native Creeping Phlox. I kept the boxwoods for structure. I added Clethra shrubs, Diervilla lonicera shrubs, Coreopsis lanceolata, Penstemon digitalis, Lonicera sempervirens to climb the light pole, asters, and a Serviceberry tree. A Ninebark shrub will provide some porch privacy from the south side.
The coreopsis and penstemon are buzzing with hoverflies and bumblebees. Planning an expansion already!
